Closing Footholds and Leaving Bondage

Temptation, Addiction, and Self-Control

Scriptures for resisting temptation, taking responsibility, building practical safeguards, and walking by the Spirit.

Why speak Scripture? It is not a formula: we meditate on God’s Word (Joshua 1:8), confess what we believe (Romans 10:8-10), answer temptation with “It is written” as Jesus did (Matthew 4:4, 7, 10), tell what the Lord has done (Psalm 107:2), and hold fast because He is faithful (Hebrews 10:23).

When this helps

Biblical focus

Use when repeated sinful habits, cravings, compulsions, sexual temptation, substance misuse, or fleshly patterns are involved.

How to use it

Faithful practice

Combine resistance to spiritual evil with repentance, practical barriers, accountability, treatment where needed, renewed habits, and Spirit-led obedience.

A simple Scripture-first flow

Suggested outline

  1. Read the central passages in their literary and covenant contexts
  2. Name the promise, command, warning, or example the text actually gives
  3. Respond through faith, repentance, prayer, wise action, and accountable care
  4. Continue in Christ-centered discipleship rather than formulas or fear

These passages are presented for prayer, study, proclamation, and pastoral reflection. No verse is a magic formula, and ministry terminology must remain accountable to the whole counsel of Scripture.

1 Corinthians 6:12,18-20BSB

12“Everything is permissible for me,” but not everything is beneficial. “Everything is permissible for me,” but I will not be mastered by anything. 18Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a man can commit is outside his body, but he who sins sexually sins against his own body. 19Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20you were bought at a price. Therefore glorify God with your body.

1 Corinthians 10:13BSB

13No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide an escape, so that you can stand up under it.

Romans 6:12-14BSB

12Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its desires. 13Do not present the parts of your body to sin as instruments of wickedness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and present the parts of your body to Him as instruments of righteousness. 14For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace.

Galatians 5:16,22-23BSB

16So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

1 Thessalonians 4:3-5BSB

3For it is God’s will that you should be holy: You must abstain from sexual immorality; 4each of you must know how to control his own body in holiness and honor, 5not in lustful passion like the Gentiles who do not know God;

2 Timothy 2:22BSB

22Flee from youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, together with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

Confession

I will not be mastered by anything. God provides a way of escape, and sin will not rule me. I walk by the Spirit, receive wise treatment and accountability where needed, and practice self-control one faithful choice at a time.
